Lifebound is a terrible mechanic#206

K

Lifebound items are an unnecessary and annoying form of micromanagment. They’re more damaging to your progress while leveling than at endgame, not user friendly, and not even noticed until it’s too late. Use a durability mechanic or at least multiple lifebound charges or something if it’s felt that there needs to be some reason to lose your items. Other RPG/MMO don’t have a mechanic like this, and for good reason.

Another solution might be to make them (much) easier to unbind. Scrolls of unbinding are currently less common than Legendary items.

That or the items need to be serioulsy hands down better. Right now everyone is trashing them because there are very few scrolls..

Make it an item availabity for hardcore players only. Casual and regular players don’t need to be disappointed with dying and losing them.

I will agree with this. When i first played i didnt even notice this feature. A bit into the game i died at a boss and suddenly i lost half my equipment… From that point onwards it felt like a extra step to check if equipment was lifebound so i would not accidentaly use it.

If i would use this equipment i would need backup items in my small inventory. And in the early stages of the game this feles so unneccesary. It would feel more ok if these items started dropping closer to endgame.

I think changing lifebound scrolls to something that you can enchant or buy would be better. Make it a gold/resource sink

I don’t hate it as a mechanic, but while leveling I find they are way too prevalent. Lifebound items should be some kind of super rare and powerful thing if it stays in the game, or at least greatly reduced. Most items should not be lifebound, then we have to carry a back up set of gear in our tiny inventory. If I wanted to play with hardcore mechanics, I’d play hardcore. Feels bad

I don’t think lifebound items are a terrible mechanic, quite the opposite. However the current implementation doesn’t do them justice: https://torchlight3.nolt.io/222

Building on Matthews, post i would go so far to create a “soft” core mode where all gear is lifebound no scrolls, this would give players options where they know that this is how this game mode is played, and when they die they will need to rebuild their character.

I’d voice my opinion and say be careful what you do with this, as of right now it seems almost 50/50 that people either love it for what it could be or hate it because they like casual gameplay.

I for one never enjoyed the other two torchlight games because i can’t stand a easy game, I love the risk factor of having amazing gear that you could lose if you let your guard down - and to top it off there’s scrolls to remove it anyway so end game it’s not even a issue.
That said I think a hardcore mode with something like this and no scrolls would be most welcomed, no point having this feature in a hardcore mode where you can just save scrolls for endgame and use it on top gear

Gonna be honest, I’ve avoided getting this game because of the lifebound system. It sounds like an annoyance that detracts from the game, rather than adding anything substantial. Barring complete removal, I strongly believe the lifebound system should be made optional.

Thank you guys for trying something new, it doesn’t happen enough. That being said I died, which is going to happen from lag spikes or getting stuck on geometry , or just carelessness etc. I have two options , quit or grind on. Right now I’m just kind of meh about it; I’m not feeling the pull a new game should have. I work and have kids like most of you guys so you know game time is in short supply and precious. I just want to relax, loosing all my gear is the opposite of that. I’m not a hardcore player nor a casual, somewhere inbetween, I can respect the Dark Souls players but I don’t have time for masochism anymore. If your going to make loot a time sink in a loot-centric game I’m sure there’s an audience for that but it’s not for me.
